How to Set up A Calm Environment for Homeschool or E-Learning

I don’t think there is a parent out there with school-age kids calm and collected as this school year looms over our heads. Whether you are homeschooling or e-learning things will be very different than years before. Trying to figure out how to set up a space conducive for learning can be overwhelming. While I am sharing links of where I purchased my items please know that if your space looks different you can always take inspiration and create your own spot that works for you. So what are somethings that a must? Starting with the basics and building from there will help ease some anxiety.

1) Desk or table - This is important, It can be your dining room table or a desk. Whatever works that you can set up to get your kid into the frame of mind that now is the time to learn. No matter if you are homeschooling or doing e-learning thorough a school you need to take breaks and maybe mix it up a bit by getting outside. For our family, we decided to get a dedicated desk. Since our space where we could set it up is not a full-size room we decided on these chairs and desks from Ikea.

2) Area to hold school supplies - This wonderful cabinet from Ikea is ideal because it doesn’t take up a lot of space. The bins are easy for kids to get their supplies. We have a label maker as well and I labeled were there lined paper, construction paper, art supplies, playdoh, etc is at. I also love that the top if a great place to put their lego storage. Also above this is an IKEA hack we did. We bought a towel rack and attached a piece of a 2x4 to the wall and we now have a place to hang Drawing paper and coloring paper. Remember that you can get creative and repurpose things you find for school.

Whatever way you have decided to teach your child this coming school year I am proud of you! I know you are making an informed decision for your family.

Optional Items -

We added some math posters to the room so the kids can work on addition, subtraction fractions, etc. When I hung these up my son said “OH YEAH, now we have a schoolroom” lol

A White Board - I am NOT the kind of person to keep a strict schedule with the subject and the time that you need to stick to. Instead, I decided to order some magnetic dry erase labels to use with our whiteboard and some dry erase markers. I will write down just the subject we have to do for the day. Once that subject is finished we then move that label over into the done side of the whiteboard. It lets everyone in the home see what we are working on, what we have accomplished, and what still needs to be done. This also gives us the flexibility of choosing which subjects to work on.

A cute rug - My son and daughter both love a rug that is soft. My son especially loves soft things it helps keep him calm when he has sensory overload. Also when you make an area aesthetically pleasing it helps get you in the mood for what that room was designed to be.

Things not pictured sensory toys- I have a bin behind my son’s chair in our bookcase that is just for him. It is full of different sensory toys that he can pick up and use during the day to help him. That mixed with the soft rug gives my son a quiet, calm place he can learn. He has moved from his desk down on the floor to work because he needed a change.

I have really tried to make a room that the kids will enjoy learning in and making sure it is Autism friendly. I know that 2020 has thrown us a curveball. I was all excited about having two kids in school and having more free time to blog, be a photographer and live my best housewife life from the hours of 7 am-2 pm lol

One thing I know for sure is that we can make it through this, lean into our village even if we can’t physically be with them. Everyone is a internet friend right now lol. Whatever way you have decided to teach your child this coming school year I am proud of you! I know you are making an informed decision for your family.
