Lupus Walk 2015
This year was the third year that we attended the Lupus walk at the Lowry Park Zoo, each year the attendance grows.
We walked to support a friend of ours, I also walk for my Aunt, sister and a few other friends who have to deal with this disease on a daily basis. May is Lupus Awareness month and some may not even know what this disease consist of. Read below for some facts about lupus.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects more than 1.5 Americans
More than 90% of Lupus sufferers are women, mostly young women between the ages of 15 - 44
Women of color are three times more at risk of Lupus than caucasian women.
With Lupus, the immune system, which is designed to protect against infection, creates antibodies that attack the body’s own tissues and organs — the kidneys, brain, heart, lungs, blood, skin, and joints.
Lupus affects everyone differently, no two cases are alike. The treatment also varies depending on the symptoms of each patient.
Lupus is a hard disease to diagnose because symptoms come and go and they also mimic other diseases however, several laboratory test of blood and urine along with clinical assessment can help make a diagnosis
I have to say that all the women in my life that live with this disease on basis are strong amazing women. I love that I have the opportunity to support them.
